The 13 singers of Belgian group Laudantes Consort mark the 500th anniversary of Flemish genius Cipriano da Rore’s birth in Missa Doulce Mémoire by doing him few favours with their earnest, enervated air, perilously close to confusing meditation with misery as they strain and stretch Rore’s elegant phrases. Rejoice, therefore, that his versatility as a composer of innovative secular and sacred, instrumental and vocal music is celebrated with affectionate care and consistency by a constellation of ensembles: Cappella Mediterranea, Chœur de Chambre de Namur, Doulce Mémoire, Vox Luminis, Clematis, L’Acheron and a host of individual artists brought together by their Brussels-based label, Ricercar, in a magnificent tribute disc, Ancor che col partire, doing much more than justice to his sweet memory.
