Never mind the width, feel the quality. This is a very short programme, and even at that somewhat dominated by Brahms’s op.74/1 Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen. Nonetheless, Robert Gosti’s ensemble, making a recording debut here, have a rare gift for sustaining a mood across disparate pieces, sacred and secular. Reger and Schumann are also represented, and the former’s Nachtlied I is a highlight, delicately but firmly sung. It’s good musicology, too, demonstrating the connection between master and disciple without overcooking it. Schumann’s choral music remains undiscovered by many; this is a great place to start.
