The roof is still on Palestrina’s church of St John Lateran in Rome and The Sixteen do not exactly raise it in the second volume of their selective survey of the lofty polyphonist’s output, with performances of the double-choir Missa Hodie Christus natus est, Christmas motets and a selection from his cycle of settings of the Song of Songs. It’s all smoothly and expertly achieved and, dare I say it, a little matter-of-fact at times, making occasional passages of drive and passion especially welcome.
