If ‘spirit of place’ can be captured in a recording, then Les Chantres du Thoronet have brilliantly evoked the majestic, resonating vaults of the abbey that is their eponymous home in Chants Grégoriens de la Passion, an exploration of the legacy of Cistercian monastic chant. Seven male voices excavate low-lying drones, take wing with vocal decoration and enrobe the whole with rich, forthright sound, characterised by a grainy post-nasal resonance.
