The excellent health of the German choral scene is amply demonstrated by two recordings: volume five of their complete survey of Heinrich Schütz is a double CD from the 18 voices of the Dresdner Kammerchor. There’s much to appreciate, with plenty of shape, colour and contrast in their reading of the Cantiones Sacrae, and their affinity with this wonderfully crafted polyphony is almost palpable, yet the recording is a little distancing, and there’s a disappointing lack of immediacy. It is, perhaps, more a reference anthology than one to listen to in its entirety for entertainment.
