A fascinating, cleverly programmed disc from the Kammerchor Josquin des Prez, celebrating J.S. Bach’s predecessors in Leipzig, Thomaskantoren vor Johann Sebastian Bach, introduces us to Calvisius, Schelle, Knüpfer et al, and ranges across almost two centuries, including some world premiere recordings. Some very sensitive singing from these classy amateurs, and wonderful sonorities from the organ of the Lutherkirche, Leipzig, played by Daniel Beilschmidt (who, together with Hartmut Becker on cello, comprises the excellent continuo duo), combine with great recorded presence to pique one’s interest throughout.
