Cipriano de Rore was a superb madrigalist so it’s no surprise that his lovely, rarely heard sacred music is informed by great sensitivity to text. The Brabant Ensemble offers two of his Mass settings for 5/6 voices along with three five-voice motets on Missa Douce memoire & Missa a note negre. Their style and tone, more subtly blended, corporate and less egotistically ‘modern’ than that of The Sixteen, is arguably more apt for sacred polyphony, and a more distant recording enhances its impact as devotional music.
