The polyphony of the ars nova piques the 21st-century ear with delicious strangeness and the challenge is to celebrate the structural and poetic refinement of secular songs simultaneously with their sensuality. i simply can’t imagine any group performing this delicate balancing-act more efficiently than the Orlando Consort Songs from Le Voir Dit, an anthology of highlights from Machaut’s masterwork . The centrepiece is Angus Smith’s extraordinary c.20-minute solo performance of the lai ‘Longuement me sui tenus’.
