That Tudor musical ‘Vicar of Bray’ par excellence, Thomas Tallis, enables The Cardinall’s Music to travel both swings of the reformation pendulum in Salve intemerata with the eponymous Mass as the main work. a suitably stony edge to the recorded sound subliminally underlines the architectural quality of that wonder of Latin polyphony, and its juxtaposition with the vigorously plain psalm setting Man blest no doubt emphasises both the religious extremes and the mutable genius of Tallis. Characterful, luminous and direct singing abounds through this programme celebrating his long career.
