There’s nothing jocular about the premiere recording of Alonso Lobo’s Missa prudentes virgines à 5 from the Spanish consort La Grande Chappelle which exhibits fine ensemble and phrasing in a chamber-style performance. recorded alongside a 6-voice Mass, also a parody of a Guerrero motet, Lobo’s crafty stile antico counterpoint is a startling contrast to the ‘modernity’ of the El Greco artworks adorning the sleeve. What this earnest and committed group desperately needs, however, is a sense of space within the music.
