Back in the 1980s I promoted a recital in Glasgow from Lars Ulrik Mortensen and his trio Flora Danica, little knowing that he would become one of Europe’s outstanding directors. For Peace & Celebration he combines the European Union Baroque Orchestra and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, in Handel’s Coronation Anthems and Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne. Recorded live at a concert in St John’s Smith Square the youthful choir launches itself with puppyish exuberance at everything, but it is this most refined and well-schooled of orchestras that deserves ‘best in show’.
