Transeamus could hardly be a more appropriate title for the Hilliard Ensemble’s final, pre-retirement disc, reverting to their musical roots with a repertoire of 15th-century English polyphony. Among these carols and motets there’s a well-judged spread of old favourites and fabulous rarities with, among the stand-out tracks, John Plummer’s Anna mater and Sheryngham’s extraordinary dialogue, Ah, gentle Jesu. recorded in their favourite Austrian monastic venue, it is vintage stuff which devotees of their inimitable sound and style will devour with, no doubt, regret-tinged delight.
