When the intellectually gifted Queen Christina of Sweden, exiled to Rome for her refusal to become a Protestant, authored the scenario for La forza delle stelle, egging on poet Baldini and composer Stradella to cook up a serenata for seven voices, the results were a delightful, semi-dramatic musical debate on the nature of love: elegant, refined and, hitherto, neglected. This persuasive, belated premiere recording features some terrific singers, matched by classy playing from Ensemble Mare Nostrum.
