There’s nothing inconsistent about the splendours of Clérambault’s Miserere and Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres as recorded in the Chapel Royal of the Château de Versailles by Le Poème Harmonique. Here is incontrovertibly superb singing and playing – tingle factor stuff– with the lavish reverberation adding its own numinous character and dictating the pace. Magical and rich, it is hardly possible to praise this production too profusely. Every detail of performance and recording has been lovingly considered and tastefully realised so that these musical birds of paradise can preen their plumage in the most regal of ecclesiastical cages.
