This generous coupling ought to be a no-brainer: that it mostly succeeds is down to effortless virtuosity from the gifted young soloist, imaginative orchestral support and demonstration-quality sound. It is especially welcome for a persuasive account of copland’s concise, tuneful and scandalously neglected concerto. If in the Barber and (especially) the Gershwin works there are more persuasive, idiomatic performances, this is still worth a listen.
