Matsuev’s Tchaikovsky is dazzling, there are no two ways about it. This is white hot, in-the-moment playing: faster passages are knocked off with panache in spades, while his singing tone is glorious in more lyrical passages. What one misses, though, is anything in between. Following Daniil Trifonov for the same label (CM 8 sep 2012) with similarly excellent accompaniment from the same forces, this is not to be preferred.
