A frustrating CD! The programme really works: lim launches into Valse nobles et sentimentales with abandon; she pairs Scriabin’s fourth and fifth sonatas; then three short Scriabin pieces are framed by Ravel’s Sonatine and a blistering La valse. Lim’s technique is never in doubt, and never less than jaw-dropping. What would be more impressive, though, is if her prodigious gifts had been placed at the service of the music. As it is, she plays everything as if it were La campanella, and her unvarying attack soon becomes wearing.
