It is just as well that a similarly structured male quartet stiffens the choir in De Leidse Koorboeken – The Leiden Choirbooks vol.6, the final double-CD in a worthy project to record this entire 16th-century anthology. Sacred Latin polyphony by Manchicourt, Johannus Flamingus, Lupus Hellinck et al is rare stuff but it is the rather quirky liturgical reconstruction of Sermisy’s Missa Philomena that is of greatest curiosity. The efforts of Egidius Kwartet notwithstanding, tight, unreleased singing from the straight-toned College, snatching at ends of phrases, militates against full enjoyment of some interesting interpretations.
