This intelligent and involving selection from Monteverdi’s final three volumes of madrigals has at its centre a rich and perceptive Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with James Gilchrist at the very top of his game. Elsewhere, even in the tiniest of miniatures, playing and singing is of the highest order, and the spacious recording does the project full justice.
