After the bear-hug of Rostropovich (Decca) and the lightning responsiveness of Alban Gerhardt (Hyperion), Bailey’s accounts of both works seem oddly understated. Many will like this slightly detached approach, especially with firm support from orchestra and pianist. Muffled cello and too-present piano in the sonata do not help.
