A real find! Venetian-born but long resident in Vienna, Caldara was a key voice in the late baroque. The circumstances behind his Requiem are unclear, and the manuscript was only recently unearthed – incomplete – in the National Library in Prague. It is concise, often beautiful and imaginatively scored (the variety of continuo being a particular delight), and here receives a committed, polished and well recorded performance.
