Perhaps better known outside Czechoslovakia for organ works, Eben produced a series of deeply felt sacred works at a time when his open catholicism would have been viewed with suspicion by the communist authorities. Many of the pieces on this extremely well sung disc are breezily attractive, belying his hard-edged reputation. Even the later, darker compositions are as approachable as they are direct. Urgently recommended.
