This short CD of music by popular contemporary British composers is centred on versatile tenor Paul Phoenix, for 17 years a member of the King’s Singers. His career has embraced a large range of musical styles from pop to classical. Joining him for three items is the vocal ensemble Apollo5, in Chilcott’s arrange- ment of U2’s commemoration of Martin Luther King, and two traditional numbers. In 1979 Burgon wrote his Nunc dimittis for Phoenix’s treble voice, and it is no less effective here in this new tenor-voice version. The easy-mannered melodic gifts of Thomas Hewitt Jones are on show in two Christmas-themed tracks – Child of the Stable’s Secret Birth and On Christmas Night – and particularly enjoyable is Barnaby Smith’s fine arrangement of the well-known Coventry Carol, sung stylishly by Apollo5.
