horizontal line

There are 18 tracks here, suggesting a further two volumes to complete the œuvre of one of the most distinctive voices in 20th-century cathedral music. The combination of girls’ and boys’ voices in Lincoln’s treble line is attractive and loses no noticeable timbre from its combination. Colin Walsh’s accompaniment is characteristically perfect; the choir’s expansive phrases under Aric Prentice’s direction soar and the overall balance is nearly always refined. Informative notes (the sublime ending to Like as the hart was the composer’s second attempt) make this disc – and likely those to follow – a valuable documentation of many seldom-heard pieces which are of equal standing to the familiar.
