Another contemporary offering is Hans Abrahamsen’s song cycle, let me tell you, performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons, and sung by Barbara Hannigan. Nelsons leads his forces through the work’s microtonal precision with skill, and the music creates a generally ethereal atmosphere, though occasionally the extremely high sustained strings and piccolo did create the aural equivalent of running fingernails down a blackboard. The text is by Paul Griffiths, based on Ophelia’s lines in Hamlet. Hannigan sings them with astonishing aplomb, seemingly unfazed by the treacherously high tessitura and octave jumps, her tone remaining crystalline even in extremis.
