This CD completes hatOLOGY’s reissue of Cecil Taylor’s 1981 Basel concert, with the tracks restored to their correct running order for the first time on disc. Regrettably, the CD-notes simply reprint the essay that came with last year’s disc of the first set, and again omit the Taylor poem that accompanied the original LP issue. The second set begins with the fleet, tumbling Introduction to Z, followed by the 25-minute Garden II, a major excursion through Taylor’s highly individual sound world; it maintains a pulsating momentum throughout, thanks to his phenomenal technique and energy. The pensive Pemmican, one of three brief encores, lends support to Art Lange’s 1990 contention that, despite its musical and emotional extremes, the Garden concert ‘emerges as one of Taylor’s most lyrical recordings’.
