The subtitle of this CD, Heaven and Earth, is taken from the first line of a Petrarchan sonnet set by Monteverdi in his eighth book of madrigals, published in 1638. Petrarch’s sonnet tells of a lovesick youth who cannot sleep for thought of his beloved, his ‘source of such sweet pain’. A certain sensuousness permeates all the music chosen for this recording, including excerpts from Orfeo and L’Incoronazione di Poppea, in addition to madrigal love songs and laments. The King’s Consort under Robert King perform rapturously and the superb team of vocalists includes mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly and tenor James Gilchrist, to name but a few.
