Last year marked the 150th anniversary of Nielsen’s birth and this bouquet of familiar, lesser known and downright rare items from the composer’s substantial body of vocal work manages to catch his complex essence, homely but troubled, from the very beginning. His attempt at a new setting for the Danish national anthem is a curiosity, but a welcome inclusion, as are versions of such very familiar songs as Solen er så rød, which must be among his best-loved conceptions. The choirs sing with a great sense of ownership and pride, the Danish male voice tradition very much to the fore.
