[Rapper] Eminem went to school in Michael G. Cunningham’s hometown of Warren, Michigan, but the older man seems to have drunk from a more lyrical well, shaping a large and varied body of vocal work that seems – unusually – more widely appreciated in Europe than at home. These lovely recordings of work from 1961 (a setting of Shelley’s Ode to the West Wind) to 2014’s Memorial Concert Mass were all made in Prague. Cunningham stretches conventional tonality to the limit, often suggesting inexpressible mystery within quite orthodox forms. It’s a beguiling mix, singable but not unchallenging, and always satisfying.
