It is an inspired idea to pair Scottish and Welsh folksong arrangements from the 19th century with English and Irish from the 20th, especially when performed with such conviction and care. If Haydn’s arrangements aren’t so well-known as Beethoven’s, they are just as delightful and share characterful piano trio accompaniment, here superbly played. Gerhaher is in fine voice throughout, and his English (and Scottish!) is idiomatic and convincing. excellent live recorded sound.
