Böhm was often at his best in Bruckner, brisk and unsentimental; and here, recorded live in the Philharmonie at the age of 75, he and his Berlin players are incandescent. A tauter account than his DG studio recording in Vienna five years later, nothing is exaggerated and every moment seems to emerge organically from what came before. German Radio’s engineers capture the occasion with aplomb and Richard Osborne’s notes are a fascinating treat.
