Volume Five in Biss’s ongoing cycle – initially on Onyx, now self-published – sees a nimble, bold Op 2/3 and a vividly alive Op 79 (the tiny andante beautifully done). Opp 90 and 101 are, if anything, even finer: uncompromisingly direct with intense concentration in the profound slow movements. This is Beethoven playing of the highest order, shaping up to be the finest cycle since Richard Goode’s series from the last century.
