Aida from La Scala is a far worthier option. Having jettisoned Zeffirelli’s vulgar excrescence, more Las Vegas than La Scala, Peter Stein’s production is an elegant replacement. Panel sets form simple blocks of colour, exquisitely lit, and the costumes are stunning. The singers work hard to convey the drama under Zubin Mehta’s baton, which weaves transparent textures. Kristin Lewis may not have the most individual timbre, but her Aida is musically scrupulous and accomplished, her acting moving. Anita Rachvelishvili not only provides a barnstorming Amneris but shows her vulnerability. Fabio Sartori is never going to be a great actor, but he is sincere and his tones are golden. George Gagnidze is a vital Amonasro, almost but not quite rising to the big phrases demanded of him.
