La forza del destino from Munich is even better. Martin Kušek’s production is contemporary yet placeless, in a society broken down by war and where state and religion have failed the people. The characters are flung into a world which is stark, unwelcoming and offers no comfort: I’ve never seen a production that conveyed the sense of the title so effectively. Kaufmann is a maverick Álvaro, his voice stentorian. Ludovic Tézier is a thrilling Don Carlo, Vitalij Kowaljow a smooth Guardiano and Nadia Krasteva a feisty Preziosilla. Stealing the show is the Leonora of Anja Harteros, whose aristocratic soprano both traces a filigree line yet unleashes exciting reserves of power. Asher Fisch’s conducting displays good manners if not thrills.
