Here’s a rather unexpected but entertaining disc throwing the spotlight on the organ music of the prolific jazz pianist, Broadway orchestrator and film composer Dick Hyman. Benjamin Saunders proves as nimble an advocate as Leeds Cathedral’s 1904 Norman & Beard, rebuilt and enlarged by Johannes Klais in 2010. Boasting vividly contrasted textures, the three-movement jazz- and blues-accented Millennial Countdown is the most substantial work here, a first recording of the 13 miniatures of the Indiana Variations notwithstanding. Saunders’s moving arrangement of Hyman’sVariations on Shenandoah is beautifully realised. Hyman provides useful, if brief, booklet notes.
