Ukrainian-born Dinara Klinton graduated from the Moscow Central Music School and State Conservatory, as well as the RCM in London, a pupil variously of Krainev, Parakhina and Virsaladze. A serial prize-winner, her only previous recording was on Delos in 2007, containing Liszt’s fifth Transcendental Étude, ‘Feux-Follets’. Here she has recorded the entire set – and what a marvellous disc it is. If she does not achieve the imperiousness of, say, Arrau, Klinton brings out much light and shade, poetry, nuance and humour in these 12 studies. There is storm and drama aplenty, too. Tempi are at times a little expansive compared to some rival accounts, but always at the service of the interpretation. Terrific sound, too.
