The immense popularity of Sea Pictures, largely through Janet Baker’s iconic recording with Barbirolli, suggests that Donald Fraser’s new choral arrangement for SATB, string quartet and string orchestra has a fine future ahead of it. One may miss some of the special orchestral colour of the original song-cycle, but Fraser is to be commended for making this attractive piece available to amateur choral societies everywhere. It’s a skilful, well-judged arrangement, and when performed with such expertise and commitment by the sweet-voiced Rodolfus Choir under Kenneth Woods, I predict it will be widely taken up. If anything, the Piano Quintet is given an even more Elgarian arrangement, though perhaps something of the piece’s post-1918 quality is lost.
