In volume three of what is shaping up to be a hugely impressive complete survey of Bartók’s piano music, Bach reaches the works transcribing or enlarging on folk music themes. Many are fleeting miniatures, yet the artist lavishes as much attention and concentration on a 19-second Old Dance Tune as he has hitherto on the sonata or the rhapsody. This is at least as fine a cycle as Kocsis’ (which in any case is now download-only), and with consistently fine German Radio sound. Listeners are encouraged to join Bach on his journey.
