Gerhard Weinberger’s traversal of Reger gathers pace with this third volume on a brace of Sauer instruments contemporaneous to the featured works’ composition. As in previous volumes, performances are distinguished by an idiomatic feeling well attuned to the music, the substantial and varied op.59 Twelve Pieces acquiring additional authenticity on the 1909 Sauer organ of the Stadtkirche, Bad Salzungen (a machine Reger knew well and had played). The trio of op.52 Choral Fantasies receive poetically robust readings on the earlier organ in Dom St Petri, Bremen, dating from 1894. Recorded in SACD, the multi-channel sound is big and bold without ever losing detail; the booklet notes are detailed and informative.
