Music from the Peterhouse Partbooks, recorded in four volumes by the USA’s Blue Heron Choir on their own label, features works by Aston, Hunt, Jones, Ludford, Mason and Pygott, whose complex polyphony, exhaust- ingly edited by Nick Sandon, is efficiently if not perfectly sung. It’s well recorded, smoothly blended, and informed by a credible pronunciation scheme. The plainchant can be stilted and the treble doubling may raise eyebrows; moreover, the wobbly, stylistically challenged soprano in vol.3 undermines one’s appreciation of what is, overall, a praiseworthy achievement.
