This recording gives you the chance to savour the sacred music of William Mathias written mainly to commissions between 1961 and 1992. With his often vibrant approach he was able to offer fresh thoughts to music for the church. Particularly striking is the manner in which he uses the organ with the voices, which is individual but never over-obtrusive. Included in this selection is the introspective As truly as God is our Father to a text by Mother Julian of Norwich, the Jesus College Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis, a very moving setting of the Lord’s Prayer written in 1992, the last year of his life, and the long and testing anthem An Admonition to Rulers written for the Southern Cathedrals Festival. There are also two sequences of carols: Ave Rex and Salvator Mundi. The latter, written for Cheltenham Ladies College, is a mixture of the uproarious and sensitive to an accompaniment of strings, piano duet and percussion. The St Albans girls give a fearless performance throughout, but at times the voices tend to be shrill and the diction certainly needs attention. As always, the lay clerks are impeccable.
