Another great tenor was Fritz Wunderlich, who died 50 years ago aged just 35, and whose voice is frozen in time – fresh, vibrant and youthful. A new CD allows us our first opportunity to hear him singing a selection of opera and operetta arias plus some songs. These wonderful performances are generally on the lighter side of the repertoire – bonbons by Millöcker, Lehár, Strauss and Fall. I particularly enjoyed Wunderlich’s ebullient ‘Heute Nacht oder nie’ by Spoliansky, which will have you mixing a Martini before you know it. Vocally he is stunning, with smooth production, juicy tone and effortless phrasing. Classy and gorgeous.
