A new recording of Otello hopefully heralds a new tenor worthy of the role, and thankfully that is what we have in this live concert recording. Aleksandrs Antonenko has been singing the role in major houses for the last few years and it is good to have his interpretation preserved. He possesses the vocal heft coupled with beauty of tone and some sensitive phrasing, all for the good. He doesn’t yet offer the galvanic eruptions of rage that run through the role, though perhaps another conductor would emphasise this aspect. Muti’s leadership is spacious and finely- paced, with a burnished golden sheen from his Chicago forces. He picks out the finest orchestral detail and the chorus is outstanding. It’s good to have Krassimira Stoyanova recorded in one of her major roles and she makes a more mettlesome and characterful Desdemona than most, her soprano still deliciously sweet. Carlo Guelfisounds too genial as Iago, his baritone a size too small, but he delivers the text with pungency. A welcome addition to the recording history of this opera.
