Two wonderful, surprisingly little-known works, receiving here very welcome new recordings full of verve and vigour. They make a strong pair: Harris’ 1949 work full of Coplandesque warmth and energy; Adams’ thornier but no less approachable. Waley-Cohen plays magnificently throughout, her singing tone and command of colour entirely at the service of the music; orchestra and conductor respond to all challenges as if to the manner born. With excellent sound and thoughtful notes, this makes an essential listen.
