Venetian man of mystery, Dario Castello was clearly an individual voice: his ear for colour and vivacity feeding a willingness to demand virtuosity of the highest order. It is no surprise that this small ensemble hand-picked from the Academy of Ancient Music should play with exemplary virtuosity, but also with warmth and character that make this a very invigorating, delightful listen. There is plenty of variety between the 12 sonatas here, especially the glorious honk of Benny Aghassi’s dulcian, in a well recorded, enterprising release.
