Another miraculous discovery. It is fascinating to compare this premiere, caught on the wing at the 1960 Aldeburgh Festival, with modern recordings. The dimensions of the Jubilee Hall necessitated a much smaller orchestra than we are used to today, a chamber ensemble that is at once more detailed but much more evocative, much more foreboding. In the voice of the young Deller, we hear exactly the sound Britten was after, pungent and otherworldly. A few lapses aside, the performance is actually very impressive and few allowances have to be made for the basic but well-balanced mono sound.
