Likewise, Sondra Radvanovsky and Ekaterina Gubanova blend well in the lead female roles of Bellini’s Norma, filmed in Barcelona. In this case, Norma and Adalgisa sound like Gioconda and Laura enjoying their slanging match, but perhaps that’s excusable in the Liceu Theatre’s vast spaces. Radvanovsky assumes the title role with glamorous aplomb, her large soprano rich and accurate above the stave, occluded and occasionally wayward of pitch below. Gubanova as Adalgisa is secure and somewhat faceless, as is Gregory Kunde’s well-sung Pollione. Renato Palumbo’s conducting is elegant, the chorus excellent and Kevin Newbury’s production looks attractive but slightly boring, more a series of tableaux than a riveting performance.
