Brabbins’ Enigma is a delight: tempi and tone perfectly judged, a feeling of freshness throughout which is lacking from a number of high- profile recent accounts. Orchestral playing is of the highest order here, as well as in an account of In the South, which matches the famous early Boult recording for both grandeur and beauty. Three first world war rarities are also included, given here in French with Kate Royal in splendid voice: Une voix dans le desert is a rapt highlight. First-rate recording and notes.
