This is not music for the faint-hearted! The first performance of Improvisation Ajoutée in 1962 caused a scandal largely because of the disturbing cacophony of aggressive organ sounds combined with shouting, coughing, laughing and clapping. ‘The groans of all creation’ from Romans 8:22 is the point of depar- ture for the composer. It is a truly remarkable and terrifying sound, particular with the enhanced possibilities afforded by the experi- mental organ in St Peter’s, Cologne. Kagel’s last organ work, Rrrrrrr…,is a more entertaining selection of character pieces, each beginning with the letter ‘r’ from Raga to Ragtimes. Impressive performances perhaps best served up during Halloween!
