This is an excellent CD that combines scholarship with performance. The main focus is Bach’s Symbolum Niceneum, the Credofrom his Mass in B minor, in which the opening and closing movements (Credoand Confiteor) are composed in stile antico (i.e. derived from renaissance polyphony and associated with contrapuntal artifice). The programme also contains antico works which Bach copied out, adding instrumental parts in the process: Bassani’s Credo, Caldara’s Suscepit Israel, and Palestrina’s Missa Sine Nomine. Director Tom Wilkinson also plays two relevant Bachworks on a north German Ahrend organ: Kyrie, Gott heiliger Geist and Aus tiefer Not. A commendable project, well performed.
